Little Readers in the Prairies

My published article in Working Draft Magazine is about organizations in Manitoba helping students in Manitoba with literacy skills.

Since literacy in Manitoba has been declining in Manitoba, it would have been easy to take a negative approach. Instead, I took the positive route and found organizations using creative approaches to fixing the problem. My background in education was helpful in rounding out the story, as I was able to provide commentary, tell stories, and give insight to the education system in Manitoba.

The result? A story about therapy dogs, Pokémon cards, and the people improving literacy in Manitoba.

“After I told one student to put their cell phone away, I glanced back to see if they were listening, otherwise I’d need to take their phone away for the remainder of class. They met my eyes from across the room, extended their index finger, middle finger, and thumb to create a gun shape, pointed it in their mouth and pulled the trigger.

Rude.”
